How can I charge additional "UPS battery" from the same UPS? Please help.?

I want to connect and charge a battery from my UPS. I plan to connect it in parallel to the original battery and use a diode in series to the external battery. Please help me on this subject as what is better and safer. If this is not practicable then please help me to make a Battery charger for UPS Battery with regulator.
