What are your thoughts on the parallels between racism against black people and homophobia?

The other day it suddenly struck me that there are strong parallels between the African-American and homosexual population in America in terms of the persecution and injustices they have suffered. Do you think they should some how band together in some sort of shared/mutual organization through which they can organize campaigns to stave off future aggression?
