Bishop John Shelby Spong calls Abraham the 'Mythical man'?
Muslims love to use the results of historical-critical method when it comes to the Bible, but this is a double edge sword. The same myths and legends in the Bible are also found in the Koran, in fact the Bible is the source of the Koranic myths. So when Muslims happily use Western scholarship against the Bible, they cannot "pick and choose" the consequences of the very same scholarship and ignore its implications for their own scriptures. That very same scholarship challenges the historicity of the Adam and Eve myth, Noah and the Ark, the legends of Abraham, Moses, and the virgin birth of Jesus and many other cherished myths that Western scholarship has debunked but are found in the Koran. Muslims cannot have it both ways. They cannot pick and choose which aspects of historico-critical method they wish to assault the Christian and Hebrew scriptures with and then retreat when that method works against them - because that same critical scholarship challenges the historicity of the same stories in the Koran. If the biblical story of Adam and Eve, according to Western historical, critical scholarship is myth, then it is also mythical in the Koran. Same is true with "father Abraham."
